RIO LOBO saw John Wayne in very poor health and really struggling through his more active scenes. Despite this, his co-star Jennifer O’Neill, who was punched in the stomach by director Howard Hawks, remembers Duke couldn’t have been kinder to her and the younger actors. The Western star was even left teary-eyed by the cast and crew in how they paid tribute to him after he won his Best Actor Oscar for True Grit during the shoot.
