It could be a long season for the Seattle Seahawks. Moving on from a future Hall of Famer at QB is always complicated, and replacing Russell Wilson with Geno Smith and/or Drew Lock may not be the best idea.
But regardless of who's behind center, an offense will only be as good as their offensive line, and that was a point of emphasis for Pete Carroll's team entering the off-season.
He's A Respected VeteranWith that in mind, the Seahawks could target veteran center J.C. Tretter, who's still a free agent and unlikely to demand a huge salary for the upcoming campaign. They're a younger team, so they could use a veteran leader in the locker room:
"If the Seahawks are truly looking to restart the Pete-ball methodology, they need a dominant offensive line. They also need leaders on the team to help fill the vacuum that Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner left in their wake," wrote Geoff Shull of Fansided. "J.C. Tretter is the NFL PA president, making him a leader amongst leaders. He is an incredibly consistent producer with each of the last four seasons with a PFF grade north of 72."Durability Won't Be An IssueBut Tretter wouldn't just be there for a mentorship role. After struggling with knee injuries early in his career, he's been highly reliable over the past couple of years:
"Tretter is also very durable having missed only one game in the last five seasons. The Seahawks need leaders. They need producers. They need individuals to guide the organization into the next dynasty," Shull added. "The Seahawks could do a lot worse than signing the sixth highest-rated center in 2021 to a long-term contract."Seahawks Are Revamping Their OLThe Seahawks used most of their draft capital to fix their shaky offensive line. According to multiple reports, the poor pass protection was the biggest reason why Wilson wanted out of the team in the first place.
Also, he had to endure a beating week in and week out over the past three years or so. That won't be an issue anymore, especially if they bring in Tretter.
Niners Could Also Swoop InIf not, there's still a chance the former Browns C ends up in their division. Alex Mack's retirement left a glaring hole in the Niners' OL, so Brent Sobelski of Bleacher Report thinks they could also make a move at him:
"Alex Mack's retirement changes the complexion of the San Francisco 49ers' offensive line," Sobelski explained. "Like Mack, Tretter excels in calling protections and leading a zone-heavy scheme."The Niners have less cap space than the Seahawks, so this move is less likely. But regardless of where he goes, it's clear that he's not ready to walk away just now.
