It is no secret that President Joe Biden is deeply unpopular, and that powerful Democratic insiders are looking at replacing him ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
Since August last year, Biden's approval rating has been below 50 percent, plunging to historic lows in June and July. But according to one new poll, Biden's popularity has increased in recent weeks.
Biden's Approval RisesIn the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll that gathered responses from a total of 1,005 American adults, 40 percent of respondents said they approve of the job Biden has been doing as president.
This may be a historically low number, but Biden's approval rating was worse in the previous months. In May, for instance, just 36 percent approved of Biden's performance in the White House.
Still, Biden is not as unpopular as Trump, whose approval rating in the Reuters/Ipsos poll bottomed out at 33 percent in December 2017.
Partisan Differences
Reuters and Ipsos recorded stark partisan differences.
Seventy-eight percent of respondents who identified as Democrats approved of Biden's job performance, while only 12 percent of Republicans agreed.
But this is still a good sign for Biden, being that 69 percent of Democrats approved of his performance in the White House last month.
Though most Democrats apparently approve of Biden, other polls show that the vast majority of them would prefer a different candidate in 2024 and believe Biden should not even seek reelection.
Why Is Biden's Approval Rating Up?The uptick in Biden's approval rating was recorded amid news that the president is about to achieve one of his greatest accomplishments thus far.
As Reuters noted, the Senate approved on Sunday a massive bill that aims to lower drug prices, raise corporate taxes, and tackle climate change.
The bill will most likely pass the House of Representatives, where Democrats have a relatively solid majority, and give the ruling party a major victory ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.
Republicans are poised to win both chambers of Congress in November, but it appears as though Democrats are slowly closing the gap.
Biden Vs. Trump
Former President Donald Trump has not officially launched his 2024 campaign yet, but he has made it more than obvious that he wants to run again.
Though the political landscape could — and probably will — radically change by November, current polling suggests Trump would easily beat Biden.
For example, in a Harvard CAPS-Harris poll released earlier this month, 45 percent said they would vote for Trump and 41 percent said they'd back Biden.
At the same time, polling suggests Americans would rather not have to choose between Trump and Biden — in a recent Quinnipiac poll, 71 percent said they don’t want Biden in 2024 and 64 percent said they don’t want Trump, per Bloomberg.
