Country star Crystal Gayle survived ‘humble’ childhood through singing

COALMINER’S daughter Crystal Gayle became a star almost through osmosis. “My mum said I could sing before I could walk,” Crystal, 71, tells me – a consequence, she says, of growing up the youngest of eight. Their humble wooden home in Kentucky’s Appalachian Mountains had no electricity, no running water and no inside toilet, but it was awash with music and love.
