Days before the 2021 NFL season officially starts, veteran quarterback Cam Newton found himself back on the free agency market. On Tuesday, the New England Patriots have agreed to part ways with Newton and hand the role as starting quarterback to Mac Jones, whom they selected as the No. 15 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Since being released by the Patriots, Newton has been already linked to several NFL teams who are in dire need of a veteran presence at the quarterback position.
Cam Newton To Dallas Cowboys
In a recent article, Joe Rivera of Sporting News created a list of potential landing spots for Newton. One of the NFL teams whom Rivera believes should pursue the veteran free-agent quarterback is the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys may currently have Dak Prescott as their starting quarterback, but the 28-year-old signal-called is coming off a bad ankle injury and dealt with a shoulder injury during the training camp.
By having a player like Newton, the Cowboys would have insurance in case Prescott is unable to return to his 100 percent health in the 2021 NFL season.
Cowboys Not Interested In Signing Cam Newton
Despite his age and deteriorating performance, most people believe that Newton would be a great addition to NFL teams that need a reliable backup quarterback like the Cowboys. Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is one of the people who think that Newton still has some gas left in his tank. However, as of now, McCarthy revealed that the Cowboys aren’t considering the idea of signing Newton to a contract.
"I think he has a ton of football left," McCarthy said, as quoted by Jori Epstein of USA Today on Twitter. "We’re very excited about the group we have."
Coach Mike McCarthy Happy With Cowboys’ QB Depth
McCarthy is definitely aware of what Newton can contribute to their team but as of now, he doesn’t see the need of adding another quarterback to their roster. Despite the shoulder injury that he suffered during the training camp, Prescott is expected to be available when the Cowboys face Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 10.
Also, the Cowboys currently have Cooper Rush serving as the primary backup for Prescott and recently claimed Will Grier off the waivers to further boost their quarterback depth.
Cam Newton Asks Fans Not To Feel Sorry For Him
With McCarthy’s recent statement, it’s safe to cross the Cowboys on the list of potential free-agency destinations for Newton. Despite the things that are currently happening to him right now, Newton humbly asked his fans not to feel sorry for him.
“I really appreciate all the love and support during this time but I must say please don’t feel sorry for me. I’m good,” Newton said, as quoted by NBC Sports.
Other NFL teams that could pursue Newton include the Houston Texans, Washington Football Team, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Baltimore Ravens.
