Fourth of July fireworks are a beloved part of Independence Day celebrations for most Americans, and this year promises to bring a special treat. While the 2020 festivities have looked very different given the COVID-19 pandemic, the nation can once again gather outside to take in the show with much less fuss and double the enthusiasm.
Here are some of the best places throughout the U.S. to enjoy an impressive fireworks display whether you’re trying to avoid crowds or join them.
Manhattan, New York
There’s no doubt that the nation’s largest pyrotechnic show of the year will happen in New York City. In 2021, the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks celebration is back and will be bigger and brighter than ever.
"Live from New York City, five barges positioned on the East River will launch an epic celebration that will inspire a renewed sense of hope and optimism among our fellow New Yorkers and viewers nationwide," executive producer Will Coss said in a statement.
More than 65,000 shells will be launched into the air starting at about 9:25 p.m. local time on Sunday, lighting up the skyline with a brilliant display that Coss promises will be "spectacular."
Washington, DC
The National Mall in Washington, DC will be hosting a splendid fireworks show this year running from 9:09 to 9:26 p.m. Those looking to enjoy the spectacle in a more private setting away from the crowd can choose between a number of scenic vantage points along the Potomac River.
As always, the show will be preceded by the A Capitol Fourth event, a star-studded concert hosted this year by multi-platinum recording artist Vanessa Williams. The list of performers for the 2021 festivities includes Jimmy Buffett, Cynthia Erivo, Alan Jackson, Pentatonix, Jennifer Nettles, Auli’i Cravalho, Gladys Knight, Mickey Guyton, Ali Stroker, Jimmie Allen, Laura Osnes, and many others.
“As families and friends reunite and the country begins to open up this Fourth of July, we plan to bring you an exciting program with the greatest fireworks display in the nation, performances by the biggest stars and patriotic favorites,” said executive producer Michael Colbert.
St. Louis, Missouri
A gorgeous place to watch the Fourth of July pyrotechnic display is underneath the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. Catch the fireworks against the iconic backdrop of the Mississippi River at the 2021 Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular event — "the largest fireworks show Fair Saint Louis has ever produced, resulting in an unforgettable spectacle you won’t want to miss," according to the organizers.
The fireworks show starts at 9:45 p.m. and will stream live at KMOV.com and on the KMOV app for anyone who wishes to tune in from home.
Nashville, Tennessee
For a fun-filled day of music, family activities, and good memories, don’t miss the Let Freedom Sing! event in Nashville. Just like every year, the Tennessee capital is staying true to its Music City nickname with an epic show headlined by Brad Paisley and performances from Lilly Hiatt, Regi Wooten, and Priscilla Block.
"This 4th of July will feature the largest fireworks show in Nashville history with the pyrotechnics synchronized to a live performance by the GRAMMY-winning Nashville Symphony," state the organizers.
Houston, Texas
The annual Freedom Over Texas celebration in Houston will be drawing in the crowds with an unforgettable fireworks display this Fourth of July. Perfectly choreographed to music, this year’s pyrotechnic show will surpass anything Houstonians have ever seen.
"Fireworks will reach 800 feet, almost doubling the height of the traditional show, for more to enjoy from further away," said the organizers, noting that "open spaces and neighborhood parks with a view of the western downtown skyline are ideal" for viewing the show.
The majestic fireworks will be coupled with a live music show opened by Jimmie Allen, with Lee Brice as the headliner. Also performing are American Idol’s Alanis Sophia, local musicians Brian Jack & the Zydeco Gamblers, and the Houston Symphony.
