The Dallas Cowboys’ season ended as it usually does: With big disappointment.
Despite ranking among the NFL‘s finest for most of the season, Mike McCarthy’s team shot itself in the foot over and over with poor discipline and a terrible offensive display, losing at home to the San Francisco 49ers.
But the worst part didn’t even happen on the gridiron but in the bleachers, as several Cowboys fans started throwing trash at the referees after the controversial and shameful end of the game.
Prescott First Thought The Fans Threw Trash At The Players
When asked about that incident, Cowboys QB Dak Prescott originally thought the fans were throwing trash at the players.
Needless to say, he didn’t hesitate to call them out and show his repulse:
“No, I didn’t see that. It’s sad. You’re talking about a team, you’re talking about men coming out each and every day of their lives and give everything to this sport, give everything to this game of football," Dak told the media, per Fan Sided. "Nobody wants to succeed more than we want to succeed. I understand fans and the word ‘fan’ for fanatic, I get that. But to know everything that we put into this, day in and day out, try our hardest, nobody comes into the game wanting or expecting to lose, and for people to react that way when you’re supposed to be a supporter and be with us through thick and thin, that’s tough.”
Dak Credits The Fans For Throwing Trash At The Referees
But when they told him that the fans were throwing trash at the refs and not the players, Prescott shockingly sided with them:
"Credit to them then. Credit to them," Dak said."
Some people in the room asked him to clarify and maybe give him a chance to backpedal. Instead, the QB doubled down on his take.
"If the fans felt the same way as us and that’s what they were doing it for, yeah, I’m guessing that’s why the refs took off and got out of there so fast," Prescott added. "Yeah, I think everybody is upset with the way that this thing played out. I’m sure a fan would feel the same way that we do."
That’s far from what you’d expect from the face of such a popular franchise, and the league is likely going to take actions after his words.
Dak Defends The QB Draw Call
Prescott stood by his coach and claimed that calling a QB draw at that point in the game was a good decision. He added that it was a ‘tough loss to accept’ and didn’t elaborate any further:
"We’ve practiced it,"_ Prescott said, per NFL.com. "You hand it to the center. The umpire, all he has to do is usually come in and tap the ball. Don’t necessarily know exactly … why the hit (with the official) happened, I guess. Yeah, I know he’s going to come in and touch the ball. We could say, yeah he needs to be closer to the ball or whatever, but in hindsight it’s just tough. Just tough to accept."_
Cowboys Won't Fire Mike McCarthy
Even despite his team’s collapse and lack of discipline, Cowboys’ VP Stephen Jones claimed that they haven’t even entertained the thought of firing coach Mike McCarthy after two seasons:
"Absolutely. Very confident," Jones responded. "I don’t even want to discuss anything like that at this particular time. That’s not on the table. The game speaks for itself."
Considering it took them so long to get rid of Jason Garrett, it seems like Cowboys fans could be in for years of questionable calls.
