Dakota Johnson Presents Best Feature
The 31st Gotham Awards held at Cipriani Wall Street in New York, celebrated independent movie and TV content in a highly secured, COVID-free setting. This year, the Gothams decided to present gender-neutral acting categories, a first for the award-giving body.
The Best Feature category was presented by Johnson and the actress couldn’t help but let out a small giggle after reading the winner – The Lost Daughter, which beat Pig, Passing, The Green Knight and Test Pattern.
Olivia Colman's Outstanding Performance
Earlier in the evening, Olivia Colman also won Lead Performance for her role as a professor obsessed with a young woman named Nina, played by Johnson.
The psychological drama is based on a novel of the same name written by Elena Ferrante. It tells the story of a woman’s growing obsession with a younger lady and her daughter, uncovering a mysterious past.
Maggie Gyllenhaal's Speech
The biggest winner of the night is Maggie Gyllenhaal, who not only directed the movie but also wrote the screenplay, which also won in its category.
In her acceptance speech, Maggie praised Netflix for their celebration of women.
“It’s expensive to make movies. Movies cost a lot of money. you can write them, but someone’s got to make them. So then the question becomes, what is valuable?” she started.
“Is women telling stories that resonate between us valuable? And is it high art? And is it appealing to men? To see women that actually look like their wives or their sisters or their mothers up on screen? I think the lineup of films being celebrated here tonight says ‘Yeah, it f-ckin’ is.’”
Dakota Johnson Praises Maggie Gyllenhaal
Johnson has nothing but praise for Gyllenhaal, who she says created a "safe space" for her during filming – an environment she didn’t have in 50 Shades Of Grey.
“I haven’t worked with an actress directing me before. Maggie knows what it feels like to be an actress — acting especially when your body is so on display. She created a profoundly safe environment so that I felt free and safe and held and supported,” Johnson shared in an interview.
