HE WAS one of the greatest artists to come out of the late 70s New Wave explosion, churning out gem after caustic gem with Pump It Up, Alison and Oliver’s Army Elvis Costello wrote pop with attitude, wilfully biting the hand that fed him and snarling at radio DJs for “trying to anaesthetise the way that we feel”. He wasn’t playing at rebellion, he meant it.
