On Friday, President Joe Biden warned the American people that the fight against the novel coronavirus is far from over and called on everyone to stay vigilant.
As The Hill reported, while delivering remarks on the March jobs report, Biden argued that it is imperative people adhere to social distancing rules and remain cautious.
“Too many Americans are acting as if this fight is over. It is not,” he told a group of reporters, noting that cases and deaths are surging across the nation.
Coronavirus Is ‘Spreading More Rapidly,’ Biden Says
Biden said that everyone needs to do their part in order for the situation to normalize by July 4.
“I’ve told people that if my administration did the hard work of getting shots to all Americans in the next few months, if the American people continued to do their part — mask up, practice social distancing — we could have a more normal July 4th,” he said.
“But this is still April, not July. We aren’t there yet. And so cases are going up again. The virus is spreading more rapidly in many places. Deaths are going up in some states.”
‘We Need To Finish This Job,’ Biden Says
Biden concluded his remarks by repeatedly stressing that everyone needs to take precautions and follow social distancing guidelines as vaccination continues.
“So I ask, I plead with you: Don’t give back the progress we’ve all fought so hard to achieve. We need to finish this job,” he said.
The Biden administration has administered 20 million vaccines in the past week. According to the president, there will be enough vaccines for every American adult by May.
Still, administration officials have issued dire warnings, claiming that more contagious variants of COVID-19 are spreading.
COVID-19 Cases Are Rising
As reported by The New York Times, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Biden administration’s chief science adviser, recently said that many states have eased restrictions prematurely.
Large gatherings, such as spring break gatherings in Florida, have also contributed to the surge in new COVID-19 cases, Fauci said.
Other scientists have warned that coronavirus variants such as B.1.1.7 could spread across the country. According to Bill Hanage, an epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. School of Public Health, the B.1.1.7 variant is at least 50 percent more transmissible than the original virus.
CDC Is Right To Be Concerned, According To Fauci
Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky recently shared her feelings of “impending doom,” suggesting that the pandemic could get a lot worse before it gets any better.
In an interview this week, as The Inquisitr reported, Fauci said that he would not use such terminology to describe what’s coming, but noted that Walensky made a “valid point.”
According to Fauci, the fact that COVID-19 cases are rising is reason for concern and Americans should not “declare victory” over the pandemic yet.
