Before going to Glyndebourne to see Handel’s Alcina, I spoke to two friends who had already seen it and their reports were almost identical: the music was brilliant, the singing was superb, the orchestra were great, and they hugely enjoyed it despite not having the faintest idea what was going on most of the time.
