The world is coming together to aid Ukraine as it defends itself against unprecedented Russian aggression, but some in the United States appear to be on Vladimir Putin's side.
Former President Donald Trump made waves this week when he suggested that Putin is carrying out the invasion in a "genius" way, and now he is being condemned by figures across the political spectrum.
Former secretary of state and Trump's 2016 opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton, has weighed in on the situation as well.
Clinton Slams Trump
Speaking on MSNBC, Clinton referenced Trump's comments about Putin.
"We have to also make sure that within our own country we are calling out those people who are giving aid and comfort to Vladimir Putin, who are talking about what a genius he is, what a smart move it is, who are unfortunately being broadcast by Russian media, not only inside Russia, but in Europe to demonstrate the division within our own country," the former secretary of state said, as reported by Fox News.
Putin's Enablers
Clinton also argued that some in the Republican Party are following in Trump's footsteps and acting as enablers for Putin's brutal regime.
"This is heartbreaking, but it’s also dangerous, and I think it’s time for what’s left of the Republican Party that has any common sense not just to say, OK, go help defend Ukraine against Putin, but to stand against those people in politics and government, in the media and elsewhere in our own country who are literally giving aid and comfort to an enemy of freedom and democracy."Spineless RepublicansClinton told MSNBC that with the "ascent of Trump" many Republican politicians lost their "spine" when it comes to confronting Putin and Russian aggression.
This, she stressed, cannot be allowed to go on because such politicians help not just Putin, but other authoritarian regimes, including China's.
"It can’t continue because it plays right into the ambitions of not just Putin, but also President Xi of China to undermine democracy, to literally divide and conquer the West without ever invading us, but by setting us against each other," the Democrat said.
SanctionsThe European Union and United Kingdom announced on Friday that they would introduce sanctions targeting Putin and Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
As reported by CNN, the United States is expected to announce similar sanctions by the end of the day.
The measures will likely not have much of an economic impact, but they are making it clear that nearly every Western country is moving to completely isolate Putin on the world stage.
