Could the worlds of The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy soon collide? During a new interview, director James Gunn hinted at just that.

While appearing on Jake’s Take, via a report from Collider on July 27, Gunn confirmed he is interested in creating a Marvel/DC crossover, and noted that the idea for the potential project has been discussed with heads from both companies.

"[I] would be really happy to do a Harley Quinn and Groot movie," Gunn confirmed to the outlet.

As fans of Gunn’s work well know, Harley Quinn is the character played by actress Margot Robbie in DC’s The Suicide Squad while Groot is a character voiced by Vin Diesel and featured in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

During the creation of both The Suicide Squad and the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, Gunn served as both a director and a writer. So, when it comes to the potential creation of a crossover, he’s certainly versed enough on the films to act as the director, writer, or both.

While nothing has been set in stone in terms of the upcoming creation of the Marvel/DC crossover, Gunn confirmed that executives from both companies are just as excited about the potentially upcoming project as he is.

"I’ve actually talked about that to the heads of both Marvel and DC, but, you know, it’s like, they — you know, everybody’s open to everything, but whether anything would ever happen, who knows? But the idea of being able to bring Marvel and DC together in a movie is, that would be really fun for me."

Legal Challenges Could Be An Issue

Although Gunn didn’t specifically mention his idea for the characters of Harley Quinn and Groot to be chronicled in the possible crossover of the two worlds, Kevin Feige and Toby Emmerich, the men in charge of overseeing movie adaptation of Marvel and DC, respectively, enjoyed hearing about the crossover concept.

As for the biggest challenge of the potential Marve/DC crossover, Gunn said there are certain legal issues that would need tackled before he and his team could get the ball rolling.

"I know it’s exciting for even the heads of Marvel and DC to think about, Kevin Feige over at Marvel and Toby Emmerich over at Warner Bros. You know, it’s something we all like to dream about," he stated.

As for the future, Gunn hopes attorneys for both sides can come to an agreement.

"Whether we could ever get through the barrage, the Berlin Wall of lawyers we would need to get through to ever make something like that happen, I don’t know, but it would be a blast," he shared.
