Like 5 and 6, Hollywood and celebrity beefs are never far apart. We’ve witnessed a series of celebrity feuds over the years, from the infamous beef between Taylor Swift and Kanye West to the iconic rivalry between Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears and many more unresolved fights. We know that Hollywood is not Utopia, and sometimes real life happens. Here, we give you a run-down of the controversial beef between two superstars Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus.
Friends In 2012
Minaj and Cyrus appeared friendly during the 2012 Halloween when they supposedly dressed up as themselves. Miley wore a costume reminiscent of Nicki’s Smash Hit of the same year – Stupid Hoe. On the other hand, Minaj revealed her intentions to Ryan Seacrest during an interview to dress as Miley Cyrus.
Tensions In 2013
The first tension signs showed in 2013 when the supposed friends passed up an opportunity to release a joint track. They’d linked up in a popular mutual producer, Mike Will Made It’s studio, and shared a picture on Instagram via his page. Perhaps Minaj got upset over Cyrus’ claims of the industry wanting to morph her into a “White Nicki Minaj.”
Nicki Minaj then admitted to E! that a collaboration was in the works, but it fell through.
Friends Again? 2014
It looked like the Cold War ended when Miley jokingly photoshopped her head onto Nicki’s Anaconda cover art body. In a repost of approval, Nicki also captions the picture playfully, saying, “Give me one good reason why Miley made this her Twitter avi.”
The pair had a good laugh over the quirky re-edits, including a second one featuring Miley’s, alter ego, Hannah Montana, until Anaconda superseded Wrecking ball breaking YouTube’s "most views in 24 hours" record. Though Miley laughed it off, saying, “I can bring that body, wrecking ball, but I can’t bring that ass,” Minaj may have considered it a shade.
Pre-VMAs Call Out
The Miley/Nicki beef came to a head at the 2015 MTV VMAs when Nicki Minaj called out the then young Miley for talking about her at interviews. Before that event, Minaj had complained about racial bias in the award nominations and eventual presentation. Taylor Swift, who earned a nomination for her video Bad Blood, felt affronted, so she hit Minaj back.
Swift addressed Minaj directly via Twitter, saying she knows her as a women’s rights enthusiast, so it was unfortunate that she took to the internet to share her grievances. Cyrus backed Taylor’s tweet in a New York Times interview, reducing Minaj’s concerns to a jealous reaction.
Miley, What’s Good?
Fast-forward to the Miley Cyrus hosting the VMAs in August 2015, Nicki Minaj went berzerk on her after winning a moon person for Best Hip Hop Video. After thanking God, her family, and friends, Nicki Minaj went all "Southside Jamaican Queens" saying, “Now back to this B**** that had a lot of things to say about me in the press. Miley, What’s good?”
Cyrus expertly deflected, chalking it up to press manipulation while congratulating Nicki. On the other end of the stage, Nicki was still going off and throwing expletives at Miley.
What’s Happening Now?
Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus appear to still be nursing the Cold War after they had yet another public beef. In 2018, Miley sided with Nicki’s nemesis Cardi B in her single Cattitude, prompting the Queen rapper to respond during her Queen Radio segment on Apple Music.
Minaj dragged Cyrus for filth, calling her a “Perdue Chicken” and alleging she had an affair with their former mutual friend Mike Will Made It. Miley never responded, and Nicki Minaj never addressed the situation again.
We’re not sure what’s happening if the beef would die a natural death from elapsed time, or another event would trigger a reprisal. Until then, watch this space.
