MLB News: David Ross Raves About Christopher Morel

The Chicago Cubs are going through a tough time. They entered the MLB season with more questions than answers, especially regarding both Ian Happ and Willson Contreras.

Besides Seiya Suzuki's debut, there weren't many things to look forward to by Cubs fans. But even amid their struggles, Christopher Morel's surge has been a silver lining and brought hope for the future.

Morel Reminds Ross Of Javier Baez

Morel's aggressiveness and explosiveness give the Cubs something they've lacked since Javier Baez left the Windy City. In fact, his game reminds manager David Ross of 'El Mago':

"The triple there," Ross said, “sliding past the bag and popping up. To me, that exact slide reminded me of Javy. He's playing the game with a lot of passion."Morel Is Calm In The Box, Says Ross

Morel doesn't look like a rookie at the play. Despite his electric style, he's rather calm and focused before changing gears:

"That saying, 'Playing with your hair on fire,'" said the manager. "But, he's calm in the box, taking his walks. But when the ball touches his bat and he gets ready to throw the ball and goes after balls, there's a lot of electricity in that."

Thus far, he's slashing .283/.387/.491 with 2 home runs, 5 RBIs, and 5 stolen bases.

Contreras Showered Him In Praise

Morel's play and attitude also drew praise from Willson Contreras. Contreras, the veteran leader of the team, just loves his contagious energy:

"Morel brings the energy," Contreras said. "He brings a lot of things to the table. What I like the most is that — like I've said before — he's never mad. He's never concerned about anything. I think that's one thing that lets him play the way he's playing right now. He deserves to stay here."It's Next-Man-Up In Chicago

Injuries continue to pile up for the Cubs but at least, they've been able to get some production from their youngsters:

"Things are popping up all over the place right now," Ross said. "On one hand, when you get some bad news, the exciting part is seeing a guy like Christopher Morel making his debut. So, there's good and bad in all that. I think the hard part is just learning some guys and how to use them the right way and giving them the freedom to go out there and play and produce."

The Cubs won't compete any time soon but at least there's some hope for the future.
