The first season of the Steve Cohen era wasn't exactly a success for the New York Mets. They choked after the All-Star break and didn't even make the playoffs despite all the big moves they made.
They didn't spare expenses in the offseason, making a huge financial commitment to Max Scherzer, Mark Canha, Eduardo Escobar, and Starling Marte. Also, they were the first team to reach 10 wins in the regular season and look determined to make a World Series run once and for all.
The Mets Are For RealThe Mets are stacked at nearly every single position. They're well-coached by a veteran in Buck Showalter and have an owner willing to spend big bucks to take the team to the top of the world.
But if history has taught us something with this franchise is that all things that could go wrong eventually go wrong, especially health-wise. With that in mind, let's take a look at the 3 players the Mets should consider trading for to make sure they put an end to their years-long struggles.
Frankie MontasThe Mets already stole one pitcher away from the Oakland Athletics and Chris Bassitt's addition has been wonderful for them. So, why not double down and also try to get Frankie Montas? If anything, he should be easier to get.
Montas has struggled with inconsistency throughout his career and hasn't been lights out to begin the season, yet he showed glimpses of greatness during the second half of last year. The A's have no intention whatsoever of competing right now and the Mets need an insurance policy for Jacob deGrom, Taljuan Walker, and even Max Scherzer, who's not getting any younger.
Ketel MarteNot many people talk about Ketel Marte being one of the best players in the game but that's just because he plays on arguably the worst team in all of baseball.
Marte has struggled to stay on the field but it's not like the Arizona Diamondbacks have had any incentive to rush him back from injury. But even despite making just 90 appearances for the 52-110 Dbacks, he still posted a whopping 139 WRC+.
The Mets would get another big offensive threat and a switch-hitter who can hit for both average and contact. Marte would love to have the chance to play for a contender at last.
Tyler MahleThe Cincinnati Reds are… not so good this season, and it's not like they're even trying. Most of the moves they made in the offseason all but proved they were ready to rebuild and tank, so most of their players should be up for grabs.
Tyler Mahle has been one of the few bright spots for them as of late, even though his numbers took a dip since the 'sticky stuff' rule was enforced. His spin rate dropped, yet he still managed to stay in control for the most part. So, if the Mets want to bolster an already scary rotation, they should give the Reds a call.
