The 2017 World Series will always have an asterisk next to it, at least by most MLB fans. The Houston Astros, which were stacked with talent, were legit candidates to win it all; yet they did it with a little outside help.
A couple of years after their triumph, the news broke that they were using technology to steal signs at Minute Maid Park, prompting people to call them 'Houston Astrerisks' and 'Houston Cheaters'.
Sale 'Knows' Astros Weren't The Only Cheating TeamNotably, the rumor around the league is that the Astros weren't the only team stealing signs in 2017. Recently, Red Sox's ace Chris Sale went as far as to say that he 'knew for a fact' they weren't the only cheating team:
“I don't know, man, Here's the thing, and I’m going to give you my honest opinion: If the Astros were the only team doing it, then yeah. Give it back. Take it back. I know for a fact they weren’t,” Sale said on the WEEI morning show. “All these people pointing fingers, well, hey, take a check in the mirror real quick. Make sure you and your team weren’t doing something.People Should Just Let It Go, Says SaleMore than that, Sale only wants people to move on from that scandal and turn the page, as there's no point in talking about it still:
"And what they did was wrong, and I'm not trying to condone it. but, shoot, we're talking five years ago now, and we're still talking about this stuff," Sale added. "I'd like to kind of turn the page on it, but it happened, they dealt with it, there's nothing you can really do about it now sitting here where we are, so you just kind of move on from it."Chris Bassitt Feels The Same WaySale isn't the only hurler who claims other teams were up to something back then. Per Chris Bassitt, the Astros were the league's scapegoat as they were the only ones who got caught:
“Houston was not the only team doing stuff. There was a lot of people doing stuff,” Bassitt said. “It was just fortunately, or unfortunately, only one team essentially got caught doing it or was the guinea pig of it, so yeah, clean the entire league up, but there was a lot going on.”The Fans Won't Ever ForgetBut even if the players have already moved on and would love the people to do the same, it's just never going to happen. Some of the players who benefitted from that scheme may never make the Hall of Fame now, regardless of their numbers and accolades.
And the franchise, even after all those players are long gone, will forever go down as the team that condoned cheating for a full season.
