Aaron Rodgers lauded Jordan Love before an underwhelming performance vs. the San Francisco 49ers in the Green Bay Packers preseason opener.
He said he was looking forward to watching his development entering year three, yet he threw three picks and had a passer rating of 66.0 in the first half of the game. However, Rodgers still focused on the positives.
Rodgers Doesn't Blame Love For The Mistakes
Rodgers claimed that he 'felt bad' for Love because it wasn't his fault that he was picked off three times in such a short time. Instead, he blamed the receiving corps for all the drops and poor effort:
“I felt really bad for Jordan the other night because, you know, we have a couple of total mental busts for picks,” Rodgers said. “We had a drop for a pick. Two guys running who knows what on the third one. He shouldn’t have thrown the ball there probably, but some of that is veteran stuff, making veteran mistakes.”He's Not Satisfied With The WRs
Rodgers went as far as to point out a clear example of how the WRs failed Love. He called out rookie Romeo Doubs for a drop and losing the ball while on the ground for an interception:
“Like I said, dropped pick, not a great route, not a great finish by Romeo. The one that becomes a bogus pick. And then a bad decision but a terrible route inside,” Rodgers added.He Had Love's Back
Rodgers also gave Love credit for his footwork and rhythm, stating that the stat sheet didn't tell the whole story of how he actually played in the preseason opener:
“Might look bad in the stat sheet with three picks, but the film tells a different story,“ Rodgers said. "I thought he did some really good things. The most important for any age quarterback is the feet, throwing the ball on time and on rhythm. I think he’s done a really nice job of really focusing on the little things this training camp, throwing the ball more on time. It’s about consistency.”Will They Bring In More Help?
Well, that's the second time in less than a week that Rodgers calls out the WR corps. He claimed they wouldn't be out there if they continued to drop passes and criticized their route-running.
So, will the Packers try and trade for a veteran or dig deep into the free agent pool, or will they hope the young guns turn things around? Right now, their QB1 seems far from happy.
