Since the 2020 NFL season came to an end, the Green Bay Packers have been doing everything they can to address the issue involving veteran quarterback and reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers. The rumors surrounding Rodgers started in late April when reports surfaced about his unhappiness and desire to leave the Packers. Instead of immediately granting his trade request, the Packers tried to find a way to convince the nine-time Pro Bowl to stay in Green Bay for at least another season.
Aaron Rodgers Signed Reworked Deal With Packers
The Packers eventually succeeded to persuade Rodgers to play his 17th NFL season in Green Bay, but they needed to meet certain conditions to make it happen. These included giving him a new contract that would make it easier for the veteran quarterback to leave the Packers after the 2021 NFL season.
According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, Rodgers has recently signed a "reworked deal" with the Packers. Based on the new contract, the 2023 on his contract will be voided, making 2022 as the final year of his deal with the Packers. Also, the forfeiture provisions on his contract no longer exists.
Packers Obtain Salary Cap Flexibility
Rodgers isn’t the only one who benefitted from the reworked deal, but also the Packers. Rodgers’ new contract helped the Packers obtain some financial flexibility. On Twitter, ESPN‘s Field Yates revealed how much the veteran quarterback would be paid in 2021 & 2022 NFL seasons.
Rodgers’ salary for the 2021 NFL season would be $ 27,573,568 which is less than $ 10 million compared to his previous contract. Meanwhile, should he decide to remain with the franchise for another year, the Packers would need to pay him $ 46,144,157.
Aaron Rodgers Highly Expected To Leave After 2021 NFL Season
Rodgers’ salary in the 2022 NFL season would undeniably pose a major financial problem for the Packers. To lessen the impact of his massive contract, the Packers would need to give him another extension. However, Green Bay may no longer need to worry about Rodgers’ $ 46 million salary since he’s highly expected to leave next year.
Despite his age and deteriorating performance, several teams are still expected to express a strong interest in getting Rodgers from the Packers. Some of his potential suitors on the market include the Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers, Washington Football Team, New Orleans Saints, Las Vegas Raiders, and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Packers Put Aaron Rodgers On A Pitch Count
The Packers have recently decided to put Rodgers on a pitch count, something that he has never experienced since the start of his NFL career. Packers coach Matt LaFleur revealed that they made the decision to avoid "wear and tear" on Rodgers’ arms.
"I think we’re mindful of that with all our quarterbacks, just making sure [of] that because having three quarterbacks, that’s a lot of wear and tear on the arm and we don’t want to burn ’em out too early," LaFleur said, as quoted by ESPN. "So he and I did talk about exactly what number we’re looking for each day or being below a certain number."
