The Dallas Cowboys got off to a solid start of last season, nearly knocking down the reigning Super Bowl champions and showing offensive confidence we hadn't seen from them in years.
Also, Dan Quinn managed to turn their defense around and, for the first time in ages, it looked like they were legit candidates to go all the way. Then, their offense vastly regressed in the second half of the season, and their defense's lack of discipline also hurt them when it mattered the most.
Irvin Says The Cowboys Aren't Better This SeasonNow, they have to get over the hump with a roster that will be less talented this season, which is why team legend Michael Irvin believes they'll need to be tougher to overcome that lack of talent:
“They have lost talent. They are not a better team talent-wise,” Irvin said, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “This game doesn’t require skill. It requires will. If a team loses a little bit of skill but gains greater will, they call still do great things."They Need More Will And Less Skill, Says IrvinThe Cowboys showed a lack of will at times last season, but Irvin hopes that the heartbreaking home loss to the 49ers could ignite their fire once and for all:
"If the Cowboys can take the disappointment of that defeat against San Francisco, beating you at home … if they can take that and internalize it in the offseason and come with less skill and more will and have a better season," Irvin added.Irvin Thinks The Players Don't Care EnoughIrvin was disappointed in the team's effort in the playoffs, stating that he wanted to see them out there on the field proving that they cared:
“They are not as skilled as they were last year,” Irvin said. “When you lack skill, you have to overcome it with will and togetherness. A man’s greatest promise comes from their greatest pain. If they felt the pain like we felt and like those fans. I want to see them jokers on the field cry like that. I want it to hurt them like that. But I haven’t seen that. I hope they cry like karate men, on the inside. But I haven’t seen it outside.”Dak Prescott Will Be The Key To Get Over The HumpIrvin also believes that the team is a Dak Prescott breakout year away from being a legit threat. Even with less talent at his disposal, he thinks he can lead them to a Super Bowl if he improves in the offseason:
“Hopefully that improvement can make up for some of the loss of talent we have seen this offseason,” Irvin said. The NFC East will be slightly better in 2022 so the Cowboys better start showing the teeth if they want to stay atop of the division.
