As it's happening more and more often during every NFL offseason, a star's social media activity has prompted countless rumors about his future with his team.
This time, the word around the league is that Deebo Samuel could force his way out of the San Francisco 49ers if they don't meet his salary demands for a contract extension, as he's entering the final year of his rookie deal.
Samuel Scrubbed The Niners From Social Media
Samuel recently wiped out his social media profiles, scrubbing every single mention or reference to the Niners. This has happened multiple times in the past when players try to use their leverage to force the team to negotiate, so it's not like it's something new.
Then again, coming from the Niners' undisputed no. 1 weapon, the front office, and the fans should view this as a big sign of concern.
He Wants Top-Dollar
According to Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort-Worth Star Telegram, the USC product now wants to be the highest-paid non-QB player in the NFL, something that makes sense given his ability to produce from the backfield and as a wideout:
"49ers WR Deebo Samuel wants to be the highest paid non quarterback because of his impact and versatility. Who can argue after what he did in 2021?" Hill reported.Niners Have Doubts About His Health
Samuel's salary demands will top Tyreek Hill's $ 30 million per year. However, the Niners are reportedly wary about making such a huge financial commitment to him as his huge usage may not be sustainable:
"The 49ers might have some reservations about Samuel’s ability to stay healthy if he’s catching four passes per game and running it seven times," reported Kyle Madson of NinersWire. "He dealt with injuries in 2020 that limited him to only seven games, and San Francisco will have to figure out whether they can continue utilizing him as a runner as often as they do while also ensuring he’s staying on the field and involved in the passing game."His Production Speaks For Him
But even if the Niners are hesitant about committing even more money to an injury-prone player, Samuel sure made a big case for being one of the highest earners in the league.
In 2021 alone, he led the league with 18.2 yards per catch, hauling in 77 receptions for 1,405 yards and six touchdowns. Moreover, he rushed the ball 59 times for 365 yards and eight additional scores, averaging 110.6 yards per game and earning All-Pro honors.
He's become the most dynamic weapon in the NFL and should be paid as such, so the Niners better dig deep in their pockets.
