The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills have starred in some memorable playoff games over the past couple of seasons.
Their matchup in the divisional round will be one for the ages, a back-and-forth battle between two of the league's most explosive offenses with a heartbreaking outcome.
With just 13 seconds left on the clock, Patrick Mahomes tied the game and then had the coin toss go his way to win the game in overtime.
Mahomes Knows What It Feels LikeNow that the season is gone and they both teamed up for 'The Match', Mahomes looked back on that crazy game and how bad he felt for Josh Allen, a he had been on both ends of that situation in the past:
“It was crazy. I mean, the biggest thing, the emotions were high-low,” Mahomes said. “Fortunately, I think for me, I’ve been in a game like that before with this guy (Tom Brady). And so I’ve been on the other side of when you don’t get the coin toss, go your way, and then you end up losing the game. And so when I knew when I got that coin toss, I was like, I cannot let this thing which I did the next week, we’re gonna talk about that.”Pat Reached Out To AllenAllen lauded Mahomes for reaching out to him after the game. Instead of celebrating and getting carried away by his emotions, Pat was a good sport and looked out for his colleague:
“I take one kind of thing from that moment,” Allen said. “He goes down and overtime he throws the winning touchdown to Travis (Kelce) goes and dabs Travis up and he runs straight to me and finds me and we can have like a little embrace. And I just thought that was an especially at that moment. Like, for him to have the respect and the thought process of just winning the game a crazy game, and to go congratulate me in whatever it was, you know, like, that was cool, that was awesome.”It's All About RespectPat and Allen have a solid relationship. But more than that, Mahomes claims that he's got a tremendous amount of respect for him and needed to give him props despite the loss:
“I learned,” said Mahomes. “Tom (Brady) came up to me after that game that’s in the locker room came by and said the same type of deal. But it’s when you’re playing that well. I mean, these guys know when you’re you could play the game, obviously, you want to win. But you have a ton of respect for that guy on the other side. Because I mean, they’re playing great football, too. So at that moment, I was wanting to congratulate him on a great game.”The League Is In Good HandsObviously, it's a shame when one of these talented QBs has to go home, but it's all a part of the game.
Also, it's the best problem the NFL can have right now, as there are just way too many talented quarterbacks that will lead the way when the veterans are gone.
Justin Herbert, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, and the aforementioned Allen and Mahomes still have their best football ahead of them, and we couldn't be happier about that.
