The trade market for Jimmy Garoppolo has been quite slow, to say the least. Last season's performances weren't great, he makes way too much money, and he's coming off an undisclosed shoulder injury, so that's not exactly a surprise.
But the clock is ticking, and the San Francisco 49ers need to make a decision soon. Having a $ 26 million backup on the roster isn't wise, and it may not send the right message to your young franchise QB.
The Clock Is TickingWith that in mind, Niners' insider Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area predicted that the team would cut ties with Garoppolo on August 30, as keeping him beyond that day would mean cutting another player:
"I would suspect that he's released on August 30th, and then it doesn't go to September 10th," Maiocco said on KNBR's Tolbert & Copes show. "They could hold onto him for that long, but I don't think they would do that because that would mean that, in essence, they would have to cut one more player than they want to because, with him, it would be 52 players and Jimmy Garoppolo. And so with the roster that they have, I just don't see them doing that."Seahawks Make SenseGaroppolo would then become a free agent and join the only team that needs him: the Seattle Seahawks:
"So my guess is that he's released on August 30th, and probably the next day, he's signing with some team," Maiocco added. "And I know around the 49ers, that they think he's going to be ending up in Seattle."Seahawks Won't Name A StarterPete Carroll has refused to name a starting QB for Week 1 and even claimed that playing both quarterbacks isn't off the table. That's far from an ideal scenario:
“That could happen. Yeah, that could happen," Carroll said of Geno Smith and Drew Lock potentially sharing snaps at quarterback. “These guys are so even right now," the head coach added.Geno Smith Is Leading The RaceThe Seahawks claim they want to compete at the highest level, and Geno Smith may not be who they need behind the center to do that:
“I’m wide open for whatever happens,” Carroll said. “Geno has been the guy in the lead position the whole time. I’ve protected that thought throughout and he’s done a really nice job. He’s been very consistent. We’ll just see what happens."So, even though he's no Peyton Manning, Jimmy G would be a big upgrade at a reasonable price for the Seahawks.
