The Green Bay Packers landed three intriguing talents in the NFL Draft to revamp their WR corps.
Losing Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Davante Adams in the same offseason raised plenty of doubts among the fans, as they expected the team to be quite aggressive in their pursuit of proven veterans via trade or free agency.
And even though that didn't happen, they're still the oddsmakers' favorites to sign Julio Jones at +325 odds.
Rookie WRs Made A Great ImpressionBut the Packers won't rush to make any moves. It seems like they've liked what they've seen from their rookie wideouts thus far, with Aaron Rodgers stating that they all look physically ready to play in the NFL:
“Physically, they definitely look the part. All three of them,” Rodgers said on The Pat McAfee Show. “All of them have physical gifts.”They Need To Trust Their StaffTrusting three rookies to make an immediate impact is risky and they know it. But Rodgers still wants the team to have some confidence in the training camp and the hand they've been given:
“Let’s, everybody, take a nice, deep, long breath,” Rodgers added. “Trust the training camp time we have. Trust the coaching staff. Trust the relationships. Trust the guys in the room, like Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb and Sammy Watkins to help these guys out.”The Rooks Will Learn From The BestThe Packers want their young wideouts to go against their top-3 CBs and the starting defense so they get a grasp of what's the league's all about right out of the gate:
“It’s going to be great. There’s no better teacher for them than going up against our top three corners,” Rodgers added. “So those guys will get a real quick initiation into the NFL. It could be a long training camp for the offense. I like the way our defense is looking and playing. (but) It’ll help us get better."Jones Would Be The Ultimate Insurance PolicyBut if things go south, they can always turn their attention to Jones, who's still a free agent and has no traction about an imminent deal.
Jones is one of the greatest wide receivers of all time and a physical specimen, yet he's been decimated by injuries over the past couple of years, which is why some teams have been wary about reaching out.
So, while no deal is imminent, expect talks to ramp up drastically if the Packers have some second thoughts during training camp.
