Tannhäuser review: Wonderful Wagner with added Ventriloquism

Wagner’s Tannhäuser is a masterpiece. Lasting four and a half hours, including two half-hour intervals, it thrills the audience with unceasing action and glorious music that just gets more and more powerful as the plot develops. With a phenomenally impressive cast, the Royal Opera House Orchestra on great form under the German conductor Sebastien Weigle, and the chorus director William Spaulding coaxing a brilliant ensemble performance from the Opera House Chorus, all the components were there for a thrilling performance. What could go wrong?
