THE APARTMENT’s plot of extra-marital affairs was partly inspired by Brief Encounter, but the Jack Lemmon movie, which saw his co-star attacked in the street for starring in the “dirty filth”, was also based on a case of alleged adultery at the top of Hollywood involving a film producer shooting an agent in his groin.
