The Reason Why Cowboys May Not Sign J.C. Tretter

The Dallas Cowboys have been fairly quiet in the offseason. Other than the Dalton Schultz saga and how he refused to sign a contract extension, we haven't heard much from America's Team thus far.

So, with training camp and the upcoming NFL season just around the corner, some believe Jerry Jones should be looking to improve the team with the best available free agents.

Cowboys Need Tretter, Claims Insider

That includes Sports Illustrated's Logan McDonald, who recently made a case for veteran center J.C. Tretter, who he thinks would be a massive upgrade for their ever-struggling offensive line:

"It's a wonder that this move hasn't already been made," wrote McDonald. "When Dallas drafted Tyler Smith over Iowa center Tyler Linderbaum in April, it was met with questions."He'd Boost Their Running Game

Tretter would also help open gaps for the Cowboys' RB committee of Tony Pollard and Ezekiel Elliott. Now that Elliott is back to full strength, the Cowboys want to turn to the running game more often next season, thus making this move a no-brainer:

"Tretter had a fine Pro Football Focus grade of 78.7 last season. In 2021, Tretter recorded his seventh straight season with a pass blocking grade of 80 or higher. In over 1,000 snaps last season, Tretter allowed one single sack," McDonald added. "Tretter is also a solid run blocker as well and would provide Dallas with a stud in the middle of the offensive line." Cowboys May Not Like His Position

Nonetheless, the fact that Tretter has a privileged position as the NFLPA's president may drive a guy like Jerry Jones away from making a move:

"What’s the issue? Some speculate that his NFLPA involvement is a factor, which seems wildly unfair," McDonald added. "Could the Cowboys get a bargain deal? Dallas wants to return to the offensive line dominance they boasted in 2014 and 2016. An upgrade at center could help."Multiple Teams Could Use Him

But in reality, it's not like the Cowboys can afford to overlook any opportunity to revamp their offensive line, especially with divisional rivals like the Philadelphia Eagles looking to get significantly better for next season, even despite his position within the NFLPA.

Tretter would also be a perfect fit for the San Francisco 49ers or Green Bay Packers, meaning that signing him wouldn't only be good for their game but would also keep them away from some of their potential postseason rivals.
