The world’s coral reefs are facing another mass bleaching event — maybe the biggest ever

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has declared another mass coral bleaching event — with more than half the world’s reefs suffering in the last year. Experts worry global sea surface temperatures, which have hit historic highs in the last year, might push these organisms past the point of no return.
